Dr. Gertner earned his Doctorate in Chiropractic from Life University in Marietta, Georgia. Dr. Gertner is also a graduate of Hofstra University, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Biology.

Following his graduation from Life University, Dr. Gertner continued his chiropractic education, interning with Dr. Russell Friedman, a well-known, established, upper cervical doctor in Atlanta who specializes in a procedure developed by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA). Dr. Gertner, who had himself suffered a serious back injury earlier in his life, was treated by Dr. Friedman using the NUCCA procedure and discovered personally the astonishing power to heal of the gentle NUCCA procedure. Immediately after his first adjustment, Dr. Gertner felt relief. Following the first complete week of care, he was pain-free. Dr. Gertner spent two years with Dr. Friedman specializing in this highly effective spinal correction procedure.

In April 2002, Dr. Gertner returned home to New York and became one of five NUCCA doctors to practice in the state. In December 2002, Dr. Gertner created Upper Cervical Chiropractic of New York, PC.
